Rafting Permit Deadlines: Key Dates to Remember

Miss one permit date, and you may wait a full year. For these three rivers, the first dates to watch are December 1 for the Middle Fork and Rogue, and early February for the Grand Canyon.

If I were planning a 2027 trip, I’d put these on my calendar first:

  • Grand Canyon: 2027 lottery ran February 2, 2026–February 24, 2026, 12:00 p.m. MST
  • Middle Fork of the Salmon: lottery runs December 1–January 31 each year
  • Rogue River Wild Section: lottery also runs December 1–January 31
  • Grand Canyon: if I win, I must pay my deposit within 24 hours
  • Middle Fork: if I win, I must confirm by March 15 at 11:59 PM MT
  • Rogue River: if I win, I must confirm at least 10 days before launch

A few numbers show why this matters: the Grand Canyon had 478 permits for 2027 launches, and one launch date can draw 257 applications. On the Middle Fork, more than 20,000 applications competed for 361 permits in one recent year.

My takeaway: the job is simple but easy to miss – track the application window, results date, payment deadline, cancellation cutoff, and peak-season rules before I book flights, hotels, or shuttle plans.

Below, I’d use this as a plain checklist for the Grand Canyon, Middle Fork, and Rogue River permit timeline.

Grand Canyon Noncommercial River Permit Checklist

The Grand Canyon lottery happens once a year. For 2027 launch dates, there were 478 total permits available, spread across a 12- to 25-day trip corridor from Lees Ferry to Diamond Creek.

The February Lottery Window

For 2027 trips, the application period opened on February 2, 2026, and closed at 12:00 p.m. MST on February 24, 2026.

Before the window opens, set up your river user account at grcariverpermits.nps.gov so you can apply as soon as applications go live. The $25 application fee is non-refundable and covers one launch year.

You can include up to five preferred launch dates on one application. If you want alternate trip leaders, add them during the application process. They must confirm before the window closes, and you can’t add them later. One detail trips people up: the lottery uses the lowest point total in your group, so each alternate trip leader needs to stay at 5 points before you apply.

What to Do After You Apply

Lottery results are sent by email and posted online by the end of February. If you get a launch date, you have 24 hours to pay the deposit or you lose it.

Then come two more key deadlines: the final permit application and full payment. Both are due 90 days before your launch date. This is the point where you lock in your participant list and pay the rest of the permit and entrance fees.

If dates go unclaimed, they open back up in follow-up lotteries, usually Tuesday through Thursday at 12:00 p.m. MST.

From here, track the Middle Fork and Rogue River timelines using these same five deadline types.

Next, compare these deadlines with the Middle Fork of the Salmon River checklist.

Middle Fork of the Salmon River Permit Checklist

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is one of the toughest permits to get in the U.S. In 2024, more than 20,000 applications competed for just 361 permits. So timing matters. A lot. Start by understanding how river lottery systems work, then keep a close eye on the confirmation and cancellation deadlines.

Lottery Dates and Control Season

The lottery application window opens on December 1 and closes on January 31 each year. The application fee is $6.00 and is non-refundable. On top of that, the special recreation fee is $4 per person, per day.

Lottery permits are required during the control season, which runs from May 28 through September 3.

Outside that stretch, standard reservations open on Oct. 1 of the prior year for launches between Jan. 1–May 27 and Sept. 4–Dec. 31. Put simply, if you’re not launching during the control season, you don’t need to go through the main lottery.

Confirmation and Cancellation Deadlines

If you win the lottery, you need to confirm the reservation and pay all required fees by March 15 at 11:59 PM MT. Miss that cutoff, and the date goes back into the system.

Unclaimed launch dates reopen on March 16 at 8:00 AM MT on Recreation.gov. At that point, it’s first-come, first-served.

Cancellation Deadline21 days before launchCancel to avoid penalty

One deadline you do not want to ignore: the cancellation cutoff. If you cancel within 21 days of launch, the permit holder faces a three-year ban.

A couple more rules are easy to miss:

  • Permits are non-transferable.
  • The permit holder must be on the trip for the full duration.

Next, compare these dates with the Rogue River Wild Section checklist.

Rogue River Wild Section Permit Checklist

Rogue River

Rogue River uses a split permit system: lottery permits during peak season and self-issued permits the rest of the year.

Lottery Window and Peak-Season Dates

The lottery application window opens on December 1 and closes on January 31. Results come out on February 15.

Peak season runs from May 15 through October 15, with a daily limit of 120 people per day. The application fee is $6.00 and it is non-refundable. If you win, you’ll also pay $10 per person to lock in the permit.

The toughest dates to get are in July, August, and on holiday weekends, especially July 4. If those are your top choices, it helps to apply early and keep a backup plan in your pocket.

Launch Confirmation and Off-Season Access

If you win a permit, you need to confirm and pay the per-person fee at least 10 days before launch. Miss that cutoff, and your launch date goes back into the cancellation pool for someone else to grab.

If you don’t get a permit in the lottery, there’s still another shot. Unclaimed dates are released during the first five business days of April by phone at 541-479-3735. Then, starting May 5, you can look for canceled spaces through the BLM’s "Float Space Availability" tool or by calling the Smullin Visitor Center.

Off-season runs from October 16 through May 14. During that period, permits are self-issued at the Smullin Visitor Center or the Grave Creek Boat Ramp.

FAQs

What happens if I miss a permit deadline?

Missing a permit deadline can cost you the trip.

At some parks, it means you lose your shot at a launch date or the permit you need to go at all.

For example, Grand Canyon noncommercial river trips require the trip deposit within 24 hours of winning the lottery. Miss that window, and the launch date is forfeited.

At other parks, missing the reservation cutoff can keep you from getting a permit in the first place. And there’s another catch: lottery and permit payments are nonrefundable.

Which river permit should I apply for first?

Apply for the river permit with the earliest opening window.

For Grand Canyon’s Colorado River noncommercial (self-guided) trips, applications open each February through the NPS weighted lottery. You need to submit your application by 12:00 p.m. MST on the listed deadline.

For Canyonlands overnight private river trips on the Green or Colorado, book online at least 2 days before your trip.

Can I still get a launch date if I lose the lottery?

If you lose the Grand Canyon noncommercial rafting launch-date lottery, that application won’t get you a launch date.

Your best move is to watch for follow-up lotteries later in the year. Those cover canceled or unassigned dates. You should also sign up for email alerts through your weighted-lottery profile so you don’t miss an opening.
